Welcome to Evolutionary Christianity!

Welcome to my Evolutionary Christianity blog! My name is Michael Dowd. I’m a graduate of Evangel University, affiliated with the Assemblies of God, and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Over the course of the last tweny years, I’ve pastored three churches, worked with conservative and liberal religious leaders across America on important ‘Creation Care’ issues that were coming up for a vote in Congress, and managed the first goverment-funded Sustainable Lifestyle Campaign in the United States, in Portland, Oregon.

Since April 2002, my wife Connie Barlow, a noted science writer, and I have lived permanently ‘on the road’, teaching and preaching a sacred, meaningful, God-glorifying view of cosmic, biological, and human evolution in churches, retreat centers, high schools, colleges, and universities throughout North America and across the theological spectrum.

When I use the word ‘evolution’, I do NOT mean what many conservative religious believers so rightly reject. What I DO mean is the 14-billion-year history of the Universe (what well over 95% of the scientists of the world agree on) told in religiously inspiring, personally empowering, and relationally salvific ways. To use traditional Christian language, I preach a Christ-edifying, scripture-honoring interpretation of what the vast majority of astronomers, astrophysicis, chemists, geologists, biologists, geneticists, anthropologists, and archeologists know as evolution.

I just wrote a book, Thank God for Evolution!: How the Marriage of Science and Religion Will Transform Your Life and Our World, that outlines Evolutionary Christianity in great detail. What is unique and newsworthy about this perspective is that, unlike ‘creationism’ and ‘intelligent design’ (both of which have little support in the mainstream scientific community), ‘evolutionary theology’ and ‘evolutionary spirituality’ have the respect, and even the enthusiastic endorsement, of many of the world’s leading scientists, including five Nobel Prize-winners, as well as more than a hundred religious and cultural leaders from radically diverse traditions, from Baptists to Buddhists, and from theists to atheists. As of today, November 1st, Thank God for Evolution! is available in local bookstores, on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, and as a free PDF download from my Thank God for Evolution! website.

I greatly look forward to exploring with others how a sacred evolutionary worldview can deepen and strengthen our faith, enrich our walk with Christ, and empower us, individually and collectively, to be a blessing to others and to our world, to the glory of God.
